The federal government has invested in Aboriginal skills development and training initiatives through the “Aboriginal Skills and Employment Partnership (ASEP)” program. While the ASEP program has been highlighted as a successful Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) program, it is critical to note that a large focus within ASEP provides employer supports in career sectors that are traditionally known to be predominately male working environments.
As the Government of Canada becomes increasingly interested in supporting partnership-based approaches to Aboriginal labour market, skills development and employment programs, there is a growing concern to ensure specific policies are in place to support the equitable inclusion and participation of Aboriginal women.
NWAC welcomes the opportunity to work to ensure an Aboriginal women’s perspective to ensure appropriate outreach strategies and recruitment and retention approaches.
