Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF)

Through Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the federal government is invested $75 million of new funding over two years to establish the Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF) to support short-term, focused initiatives designed to help Aboriginal people get the specific skills they require to benefit from economic opportunities, including those generated by the federal stimulus package.

National ASTSIF:  As part of the HRSDC ASTSIF funding allocation, 10% of the budget was available for national scope projects. Through this stream, NWAC successfully secured national Aboriginal Skills and Training Strategic Investment Fund (ASTSIF) funding to deliver a project entitled “Building the Spirit” (December 2009 to March 2011) which has a leadership focus on providing Accreditation, Certification and Designation opportunities for Aboriginal women and youth in areas of financial management, Aboriginal program management and a specific component for literacy and essential skills.

Regional ASTSIF: The HRSDC ASTSIF budget earmarked 90% to regional projects. The call for regional projects was made available to existing AHRDA holders. Under this stream, there is on NWAC regional project underway in Quebec Native Women’s Association Literacy and Essential Skills Awareness.
