Call for Youth Volunteers
The Native Women’s Association is looking for an Aboriginal youth to join the Advisory Committee for our “Understanding from within” project exploring the impact of neurological conditions on Aboriginal women, their families and communities.
We are looking for youth ages 17-25, who have had experience with neurological conditions, whether through living with a neurological condition themselves, or as a caregiver or family member of someone living with a neurological condition. Advisory Committee members play an important role in our project in helping to make sure that we gather and share back information with Aboriginal women, their families and communities in meaningful and cultural relevant ways. As such, Advisory members will be asked to provide their input/feedback on project work through in-person meetings, teleconferences or via email correspondence. From August 2011 to April 30, 2013 Advisory members will be asked to travel to three in-person meetings, with the first meeting taking place in Toronto, August 16-18, 2011 and the other two meetings to follow in 2012. While we do not have an honorarium for Committee members, all travel and accommodations for meetings will be covered.
Neurological conditions include diseases, disorders and injuries that impact the brain and nervous system. Examples include (but are limited to): Dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease, Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome, HIV dementia, and dementia subsequent to stroke or brain injury); Cerebral Palsy; ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease); Multiple Sclerosis; Huntington’s Disease; Parkinson’s Disease; Spina Bifida; Tourette Syndrome; Brain tumours; Neurotrauma (acquired brain injury (ABI), spinal cord injuries); and Epilepsy.
Interested youth are asked to provide relevant contact information including your name, age, gender, community where you are from, as well as your address and email or telephone number along with a paragraph or two describing yourself and any experiences you may have with neurological conditions, including what you hope to learn from being on the Advisory Committee, how your experiences will contribute to this project, as well as any additional information that would outline your interest.
Applications will be accepted until July 22, 2011.
