Mental health is something that Aboriginal people have traditionally possessed with cognitive and emotional well-being that built psychological resiliency. This enabled us to maintain successful individual, family/clan, and community structures and operations, strengthening and enhancing individual and collective well being. Today’s realities were created by unprecedented influences associated with colonization, directly affecting mental health. These influences have created extreme mental health challenges. Challenges such as addictions, suicide, depression, eating disorders and anti-social behaviour – all of which have become commonplace in many of our communities. NWAC is contributes to youth suicide prevention through the Daughter Spirit in Action program and is currently in the midst of formatting other programming options to address mental health challenges.
